Emotional Regulation and Managing Difficult Conversations in a School Setting

As teachers, difficult conversations with colleagues, parents, and pupils are inevitable. They might arise from conflicts, misunderstandings, performance issues, or sensitive topics that need addressing. How we handle these conversations can significantly impact our efficacy and relationships. This talk is designed to equip you with the tools and techniques to navigate these challenging interactions with confidence and effectiveness.

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand what emotional regulation is and why it matters in school-based interactions.
  • Recognise how dysregulated adult emotions can affect relationships, learning and classroom climate.
  • Identify personal triggers in conversations with pupils, parents and colleagues.
  • Apply a simple self check framework to prepare for challenging interactions.
  • Plan difficult conversations with a clear purpose, boundaries and desired outcomes.
  • Use listening and language tools to reduce defensiveness.
  • Respond to escalation in ways that de escalate rather than inflame the situation.

This webinar is presented by Alicia Drummond, CEO and Founder of Teen Tips (The Wellbeing Hub).
