Building - and Maintaining - Positive Relationships in EYFS and KS1

In this session Fiona Dutu aims to take a deep dive into the Positive Relationships element of EYFS which is also part of best practice in KS1. After a brief intro into the beliefs and principles behind the place of Positive Relationships in learning we’ll explore how these relationships can benefit all stakeholders: children, teachers and parents and managers/leaders, thereby leading in the long term to the success of the whole school. We’ll look at the different types of relationships that are involved: child- teacher; parent – teacher and also the parent-child-teacher triangle which can be challenging; relationships between the EYFS team as well as those that children have with each other and lastly the positive relationship that should exist between the children and their learning environment, in order for learning and development to take place in the best way. With each relationship type, we’ll look at the needs of each party in the relationship, how a positive relationship should look, practical steps that teachers can put in place immediately to help build and maintain relationships as well as common difficulties faced by teachers and how these can be managed. At the end of the session, participants will leave with: - An understanding of why Positive Relationships in EYFS and KS1 are important - How positive relationships can be built and maintained throughout the year. - Understand some of the common mistakes in communication and how to avoid or rectify these.
