COBIS International ECT Mentor Certificate

COBIS International ECT Mentor Certificate is a comprehensive one-year, self-paced online programme designed to prepare teachers and middle leaders to become highly effective mentors for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) in British international schools.

Grounded in international research, evidence-informed practice and contemporary thinking on teacher development, the programme equips participants with the knowledge, skills and professional judgement needed to support ECTs through the unique opportunities and challenges of teaching in international contexts.

Across four in-depth units, participants explore the foundations of high-quality mentoring, effective communication and coaching, classroom observation and feedback, adaptive mentoring approaches, intercultural awareness, and the development of professional autonomy. The programme emphasises practical application, reflective practice and ethical mentoring, enabling participants to build trusting, developmental relationships that support sustained professional growth.

Rather than replicating statutory induction programmes in England, the certificate has been specifically designed for the realities of British international schools, recognising the cultural, professional and personal transitions that many early career teachers experience when working abroad.

Mentors of Early Career Teachers (ECT) in British international schools.

The ECT does not need to be on the COBIS CPECT course or completing an official induction period.

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to: 

1. Critically analyse the developmental journey of Early Career Teachers (ECTs) and evaluate the factors that influence professional growth in different educational contexts. 

2. Evaluate the professional, personal and cultural challenges associated with teaching and living within international school environments and consider their implications for mentoring practice. 

3. Critically examine the knowledge, skills, dispositions and professional judgement associated with effective mentoring, drawing on relevant research and evidence. 

4. Establish and justify appropriate mentoring roles, boundaries and expectations while maintaining ethical and professional standards. 

5. Evaluate and apply strategies that promote trust, psychological safety and appropriately challenging professional relationships. 

6. Critically reflect on and justify the use of instruction, modelling, collaboration, coaching and independent reflection as mentoring approaches in different contexts and developmental situations. 

7. Facilitate and evaluate mentoring conversations, including challenging or sensitive discussions, using evidence-informed communication strategies. 

8. Critically interpret classroom practice through the collection and analysis of low-inference evidence. 

9. Design, justify and evaluate feedback and development strategies that support sustained improvement in teaching practice. 

10. Synthesise evidence from multiple sources to evaluate professional progress and inform mentoring decisions.
