We are pleased to share a letter of support from Professor Sir Steve Smith, the UK Government's International Education Champion, reaffirming the UK Government's commitment to British international schools and their communities across the Middle East.
This follows ongoing collaboration between COBIS, AoBSO, BSME and HMC in response to the significant disruption to examinations and education provision across the region.
In his letter, Professor Sir Steve recognises the considerable challenges facing schools and students, while paying tribute to the resilience, flexibility and leadership demonstrated by education communities during this period of uncertainty. He emphasises that the interests of the British international school sector remain central to the UK’s International Education Strategy, and highlights the Government’s continued partnership with the sector to support stability and long-term success.
Importantly, the letter also provides reassurance that:
- Student outcomes remain a priority, with awarding organisations committed to maintaining quality and fairness in assessment processes
- Applications to higher and further education will not be adversely affected, ensuring students can progress as planned to institutions in the UK and globally
- The UK Government stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the sector, reinforcing its commitment to supporting schools, students and families across the region
This correspondence has been widely shared across the education landscape, including with UK higher and further education institutions, examination awarding bodies, and sector partners. This coordinated approach is helping to ensure alignment, clarity and confidence across the global education ecosystem.
The letter has also been referenced in a recent UCAS webinar, delivered in partnership with Cambridge International, AQA, Pearson, IB and College Board. The session reached nearly 200 participants from around 80 higher education providers and focused on approaches to awarding final grades and supporting students through this disrupted examination period.
A summary of Sir Steve’s message, along with a link to the full letter and further guidance from awarding bodies, will also be included in an upcoming UCAS Provider Bulletin.
COBIS remains committed to working closely with partners across the sector to support our members, safeguard student outcomes, and maintain global confidence in UK qualifications.
