COBIS is aware of the significant challenges facing member schools across the Middle East following recent military air strikes and the escalation of conflict in the region. A number of schools have been directly impacted, with some temporarily closing their campuses and moving to online provision.
We recognise that this is a deeply difficult and uncertain time for students, staff, families, and wider school communities. Our thoughts are with all those affected.
Over the weekend, COBIS has been in contact with Heads and member schools across the region to better understand the situation on the ground and to offer support. We have also engaged with partner organisations, including the British Schools in the Middle East and the Association of British Schools Overseas, to ensure a coordinated and collegiate approach in supporting schools and their communities.
In parallel, COBIS has been in contact with senior officials at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Department for Business and Trade in London. These discussions have focused on highlighting the situation facing COBIS member schools and the wider international schools sector in the Middle East, and on seeking relevant guidance and advice from UK Government departments both in the UK and overseas. Both departments have welcomed COBIS’ offer to support the dissemination of official information where appropriate.
COBIS recognises that UK Embassies and government ministries across the region are already sharing trusted information. However, schools and their communities are encouraged to consult the FCDO Travel Advice pages as the most reliable and up-to-date source of information. This guidance is country-specific and is continually updated by UK Government representatives in-country and in the UK, reflecting the latest developments.
Each country page provides practical support, including:
-
Access to the most current advice relevant to each location
-
The option to sign up for email updates
-
Guidance on registering presence in-country, where applicable
-
Specific recommendations should the situation change
Individuals in the affected areas can access dedicated guidance, including a route to officially register their presence with UK authorities.
COBIS continues to emphasise the strength of its global network. Member schools are part of a trusted community of colleagues and peers, and COBIS remains committed to facilitating connections, sharing resources, and supporting collaboration across the network. We are also available to advocate on behalf of individual schools and the wider sector, including in engagement with international public examination boards and other partners.
In addition, COBIS continues to monitor official guidance relating to travel, logistics, and the delivery of its services, conferences, and events. The safety and wellbeing of school communities remains the highest priority.
COBIS Board Members in the region, together with the Executive Team, are available to provide direct support to schools. Members are encouraged to reach out at any time.
COBIS will continue to listen, support, and assist its members throughout this period.
