The second cohort of COBIS Training Schools has been announced as part of our ongoing strategic work to address the current teacher supply challenge, both in the UK and overseas.

COBIS Training Schools serve as regional hubs, hosting professional development and delivering Initial Teacher Training in an international context, as well as sharing and modelling best practice. Launched in 2019, this badging and quality assurance scheme enables schools to demonstrate the breadth and quality of their commitment to professional development, with an emphasis on Initial Teacher Training (ITT), career progression routes and workforce development.

COBIS research on Teacher Supply in British International Schools (2018; updated report for 2020 being published in June) recommended that international schools could play a greater role in training teachers in their locality in order to contribute to the growth of the global teacher workforce. The first cohort of 11 COBIS Training Schools, announced in May 2019, have trained more than 280 new teachers, with recognised UK qualifications (e.g. QTS, IPGCE, PGCE), over the past three years.

Following an application process and peer review, we are pleased to announce the following new COBIS Training Schools:

  • British International School Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
  • New Cairo British International School, Egypt
  • The Regent Primary School, Abuja, Nigeria
  • St George's British International School, Rome, Italy
  • Jerudong International School, Brunei
  • Haileybury Astana, Kazakhstan
  • The English College in Prague, Czech Republic

These seven schools will join the existing cohort of COBIS Training Schools for 2020/21.
