Drawing on a vivid personal moment during his recent travels, Colin described how a single, unexpected sound “cut through everything”, a reminder of the power of truly listening in a world full of noise. This moment became a metaphor for the conference theme: not a linear process, but a dynamic and interconnected practice at the heart of effective leadership.
“Listen. Learn. Lead.” may appear to be a sequence, he noted, but in reality, the three are inseparable. The most effective leaders, and the most effective schools, are constantly moving between them: listening while they lead, learning as they lead, and creating space for others to do the same.
This message resonated strongly with the global COBIS community gathered for the conference. As Colin reminded delegates, COBIS represents “an inclusive, collaborative and ambitious global self‑improving system,” working across cultures, time zones, and rapidly changing contexts.
At a time when schools are preparing young people for an uncertain and evolving future, this mindset matters more than ever. Leadership without listening risks becoming disconnected. Learning without listening becomes narrow. And listening without action, he emphasised, changes nothing.
The call to action for delegates was clear:
- Listen generously
- Learn actively
- Lead courageously
By embracing these principles not as a sequence, but as a continuous practice, the conference becomes more than a series of sessions, it becomes a shared experience that strengthens impact across the global network.
Colin also celebrated the breadth and diversity of the COBIS community, welcoming delegates who had travelled from across the world and recognising the vital contributions of partner organisations, sponsors, exhibitors, and the COBIS Student Council. The growing involvement of student voice, in particular, reflects COBIS’s continued commitment to inclusive leadership and future-focused thinking.
The opening message for the 44th COBIS Annual Conference was both simple and powerful: great leadership starts with listening, grows through learning, and is realised through action.
And in the spirit of COBIS, these are not steps to complete, but practices to live by.
Listen. Learn. Lead.
