COBIS schools are amongst the best in the world, and most school leaders would willingly accept that they have a responsibility to make a positive difference in society, wherever they are situated; do, however, our governing documents reflect this goal? If so, how are Governors ensuring that their school contributes to this mission; if the governing documents do not reflect this goal, how do Governors reconcile their legal obligation to do the best for their school with their moral obligation to help make the world a better place?

Formal education feels stuck, particularly at the pre-university level - caught in the overlapping of complex systems, external forces and incentive modes that are stubborn and seem immovable.  While many educational leaders express a desire to change and break from the system, the cost and risk is high.  It is no wonder then that the majority innovations play within the given constraints and represent tweeks to the status quo.
