Warwick Pre-University Summer School – Helping students to make the most of their summer
  • Student Engagement

The University of Warwick has run a Pre-University Summer School for 16-18 year olds for two years now and each year we are seeing an increase in students from across the world who would like to spend some of their vacation with us for an inspirational and unforgettable summer. In the first year alone, we attracted students from 22 different countries and one of the key highlights for the students on the programme is meeting students from such a diverse range of backgrounds.

I miss the programme very much. What I liked about the programme the most is the environment which students are surrounded in. I have never come across such a diverse group and it was a pleasure getting to know so many different people. The campus was spectacular and the Warwick staff were very polite and inclusive. Moreover, the quality of the lectures was excellent. Professor Abhinay always encouraged us to challenge him and present to him different opinions. Honestly speaking, after the programme I realised how much of an interest I have in Economics and now I'm even planning to become an Economist. Thank you for making it such a memorable experience for me.” Haneen Farid, India

The Summer School is a ten night residential, fully inclusive programme which includes an academic course taught by top Warwick faculty, a cultural and social programme and allows students to live in our halls of residence alongside our Warwick student ambassadors who participate in every element of the programme giving students the chance to hear what university at Warwick and in the UK is really all about.

The Warwick Pre-University Summer School was designed in order to meet demand from younger students who wanted a taste of university life in the UK at a top university. The University of Warwick is a top-class research university in the Russell Group and consistently ranks in the top ten of all major domestic rankings. In 2020 Warwick University ranked 62nd in the QS World University Rankings and is also ranked in the top 25 'Most International' universities in the world, Times Higher Education, 2019. The University of Warwick is home to over 9,500 students from 147 countries and so many students would like to experience a little taste of this before making their important university choices.

Early in 2019, I was undecided on what courses I wanted to study and afraid of being unfamiliar with university life. But this all changed after the Warwick Summer School. Choosing the Taste of Social Sciences course, I was exposed to different subjects and I was beyond satisfied with the lessons. Having the opportunity to learn from brilliant professors I was able to put myself in the shoes of a university student and also having the chance to stay in one of the halls designed for students, I got first-hand experience of living at the University of Warwick. My experience at the Warwick summer school was unbelievable, it was a mixture of academic study and exploring the UK. The diversity of the programme was outstanding and so were our ambassadors. I am glad and thankful that I decided to spend my summer in Warwick.” Chaney Lau, Hong Kong

Alongside top-quality teaching, courses offer the opportunity to engage and debate with staff and peers in a welcoming environment, developing key critical thinking skills and developing new ideas at the forefront of some of the world’s most exciting subjects of the day. Courses on offer are: An Introduction to Economics and Finance or A Taste of Social Sciences which incorporates Philosophy, Law, Psychology and Education Studies. There are also two guest speakers as part of the programme.

The Summer School also delivers an enriching cultural and social programme incorporating a two day experience in the UK’s capital city, the visit includes the Houses of Parliament tour, visit to another top London university, West End Show and London Eye and River Cruise. Students also visit the dreaming spires of Oxford, visit a college at Oxford and experience a walking tour and punting tour so really get to know the history of this beautiful university city.

When on the university campus for nine nights, we have lots of fun, ambassadors run lots of activities to keep students busy and we offer a welcome BBQ, bowling and for the first day of the programme will be going off campus for a team building event which looks really exciting and provides lots of fun outdoor adventure activities.

The students all live in nice en-suite Halls of Residence on campus with all catering included. In London we also stay in a Halls of Residence with en-suite bathrooms in South Kensington.

Warwick Pre-University Summer School is a productive, exciting way to spend your summer broadening your educational horizon, making friends and learning from some of the UK’s top teaching staff.
