Driving Professional Growth: Cultivating Reflection, Collaboration and Innovation
  • COBIS Training Schools

Written by Mark Atkinson, Learning and Innovation Leader, Secondary Campus, Alice Smith School, Malaysia

Empowering educators through tailored professional development is essential in today’s evolving educational landscape. At The Alice Smith School, we understand the importance of continuous professional growth, and an aspect of our professional learning provision which we are particularly proud of is our learning & teaching workshops. Over recent years we have led a number of learning and teaching workshop initiatives, exploring the most pertinent and current education concepts, while supporting our educators in achieving their professional goals. Some themes of the workshops include Wellbeing; Ed-Tech and AI in Education; Assessment, Feedback and Support; Promoting Agency and Independence in the Classroom; and Quality Thinking, to name just a few. These initiatives are shaped by educator feedback and aligned with our community’s shared educational goals, ensuring sessions are relevant and impactful, while improving teaching practices and student outcomes. They allow us as a community of educators to work collaboratively, reflect upon our practice and the needs of our learners, and share the most effective strategies and approaches which positively impact upon learning.

Collaboration and reflection are at the heart of our professional development initiatives. Our educators have opportunities to share ideas and reflect on their practices, which strengthens the community and creates a collective commitment to student success. These workshops provide opportunities for critical reflection, encouraging educators to think deeply about their teaching and how to best meet the diverse needs of our learners. The structure of our learning and teaching workshops also offers autonomy, allowing educators to explore pedagogical strategies tailored to their own professional learning goals and the needs of their learners.

A further significant feature to our professional learning provision has been our Learning Symposium; an event which allows our educators to come together to share examples of best practices, or to share something they are really proud of which had a significant impact upon learning. This market-place style event allows educators to access strategies and approaches from a broad range of subject areas, while thinking of innovative ways in which they could apply them to their own subject areas. Our Learning Symposium has proven very popular among educators and one of the event's key strengths is its contribution to a culture of collective efficacy.

This brief article has highlighted a number of initiatives which have positively impacted our professional learning provision here at The Alice Smith School, particularly how such initiatives contribute to our continuous journey of growth, reflection, and collaboration. Through this approach, we not only support our educators but also ensure that students receive a high-quality education tailored to their diverse and ever-evolving needs.
