Creating Clarity, Consistency and Impact Across Doha College through Developing Playbooks

Written by Uzma Zaffar, Vice Principal, Doha College, Qatar.

At Doha College, our commitment to excellence is underpinned by a clear belief: high-quality outcomes for pupils are achieved through consistent, intentional practice across all areas of school life. As part of this ongoing work, we are currently developing a series of playbooks focused on line management, teaching and learning, and pastoral provision. These playbooks are designed to bring together our shared understanding of best practice, providing clarity and coherence in how we work as a professional community.

The rationale for developing these playbooks is rooted in both research and context. In a large, high-performing international school, such as Doha College, variation can emerge not from a lack of expertise but from differences in interpretation. By articulating what great practice looks like in our context, we reduce ambiguity and ensure that all colleagues are working towards the same high standards. This is particularly important in areas such as teaching and learning, where consistent routines and approaches allow pupils to focus their cognitive energy on learning rather than adapting to different systems.

The Teaching and Learning Playbook focuses on the fundamentals that underpin effective classroom practice. This includes securing attention, establishing clear routines, and ensuring that every lesson is structured around purposeful learning intentions and carefully sequenced steps to success. By embedding approaches such as retrieval practice, guided instruction, and consistent questioning techniques, we aim to create classrooms where every pupil is engaged, thinking, and making progress. The emphasis is not on adding more, but on refining and strengthening what we already know to be effective.

The Line Management Playbook complements this by focusing on how we lead and develop people. It provides a shared framework for building strong professional relationships, clarifying expectations, and supporting colleagues through coaching and feedback. A key feature of this is the introduction of the 4Ps approach to line management meetings, which ensures that conversations are structured, balanced, and impactful. Each meeting focuses on People, Projects, Priorities, and Progression. This enables leaders to give appropriate attention to wellbeing and relationships, track the progress of key work, maintain clarity around strategic direction, and support the ongoing development of colleagues. In doing so, line management becomes not simply a process of oversight but a deliberate act of leadership that builds capacity, trust, and accountability across teams.

Alongside these, the development of a Pastoral Playbook reflects our commitment to the holistic development of every pupil. In a context where wellbeing, belonging, and safeguarding are paramount, it is essential that our pastoral systems are both robust and relational. The playbook provides clear guidance on expectations, responses, and approaches, ensuring that all colleagues are equipped to support pupils effectively and consistently.

The impact of this work is already beginning to emerge. Colleagues report increased clarity in expectations, greater confidence in applying key strategies, and a stronger sense of alignment across teams. For pupils, this translates into a more predictable and supportive environment, where routines are secure, relationships are strong, and learning is prioritised.

Ultimately, these playbooks are not static documents, but evolving tools that will continue to be shaped by practice, feedback, and reflection. They represent our collective expertise and our shared commitment to getting better at getting better. By investing in clarity and consistency, we are strengthening the foundations that enable every member of our community to thrive.
