PAST EVENTS

COBIS Student World Debate Competition

Image

Dubai English Speaking College have won the COBIS Debate Competition in their first year of attendance.

The competition started with a fun evening on Thursday, allowing the teams to get to know one another while sampling local cuisine with explanations from top chefs.

The Friday saw all teams debate four motions, allowing students to display their excellent preparation and research, as well their problem-solving and creative thinking skills. The showcase debate closed the events for Friday, with the motion "This house believes that beauty is only skin deep". The motion was contested in good spirits, with the audience voting the proposition as the winning team.

Saturday started with the final group motion "This house believes that organ donation should be made compulsory". With progression to the quarter finals at stake, there were some very close debates and even a tie between Dubai English Speaking College B and British School of Bucharest.

Following the quarter and semi-finals, the Plate final was set with the International British School of Bucharest debating against The British School in The Netherlands with the International British School of Bucharest taking the plate, although both teams put forward well-measured and thought-provoking arguments.

The Cup final saw Dubai College (B) take on Dubai English Speaking College (A), a team they had previously beaten in the group stages, in a Dubai derby! All of the students used excellent examples and insights in their speeches and although extremely close, Dubai English Speaking College (A) were crowned the winners of the Cup Competition.

COBIS would like to thank the staff and students at Jumeirah College for hosting this event and all participating students and staff for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout.

COBIS Medical Review Conference

Image

Students from eight schools across Qatar impressed a team of independent medical experts with their detailed research during the fifth Medical Review School Conference hosted by Doha College.

Students researched topics from five areas of medicine: epidemiology of infectious diseases; pharmacological developments; radiological, pathological and diagnostic updates; feto-maternal medicine; hereditary and metabolic diseases; and cancer.

The coveted first place was awarded to students who presented on the topic of Wilson's disease. The team wanted to highlight that a lack of subsidiary 'workers' in the human body can be just as impactful to the system as principal 'workers'. This was presented by Harun Gunes, Natália Wazny and Tiago Huber from Doha College.

The independent judges who presided over the final of the conference were impressed by the presentations and found awarding places to be challenging due to the high calibre of work presented.

COBIS Poetry Competition

Image

COBIS is delighted that so many schools took part in this year's COBIS Poetry Competition on the theme of "Through A Looking Glass". The 370+ entries are currently being marked by COBIS judges and we will announce the winning entries in April.

COBIS Student Leadership Weekend

Image

More than 40 students from schools in Egypt, Romania, The Netherlands, Qatar, Spain and Portugal travelled to Madrid for the COBIS Student Leadership Weekend in early October.

The event kicked off with a lively interactive discussion on the nature and purpose of leadership. Students discussed whether it was better to be respected or liked and participated eagerly under the guidance of Simon Nixon, Programme Director and Head of Secondary at King's College Panama. They then went on to collaborate in a social media project before learning about presentation skills and body language.

Further sessions on personal branding and social media profiles as well as coaching using the GROW method were delivered to the students who were enthusiastic and engaged throughout.

The feedback from the weekend has been extremely positive, with students from The British School in Amsterdam delivering an assembly on everything they learned when they returned to school.

COBIS is thankful to all at King's Group for all their hard work in making this event such a success.
