Welcome from Colin Bell, COBIS CEO
With a spring in the COBIS step, March sees our association pass another significant milestone as our global membership continues to grow. The latest stats illustrate that COBIS now represents over 300 member organisations with over 160 schools and more than 140 supporting members based in 60 countries worldwide. The introduction, this time last year, of the COBIS online membership application system continues to prove to be successful. This system provided by the GL Education Group facilitates the efficient quality assurance and assessment of potential new school members against the rigorous COBIS membership criteria. Special thanks to GL Education Group for partnering with COBIS on this project and for their ongoing support in other areas.
With more schools joining COBIS, the number of educational professionals in our network, both classroom and non-classroom based also continues to grow and the scope for high quality CPD widens. An excellent example of how our CPD provision has diversified to meet the needs of our school members is the recent 2 day conference hosted by the British School of Bucharest for COBIS Marketing, Development and Admissions Staff. Over 40 staff from 26 schools participated in this highly interactive event. Enormous thanks and recognition go to our generous hosts at the British School of Bucharest for all their hard work preparing for and delivering the conference and of course to our conference sponsors. Further details can be found below. There is no doubt that this conference will be the first of similar such programmes.
With the growth in COBIS CPD provision in mind, all member schools were to invited to express an interest in hosting a COBIS conference during the 2014/15 academic year. To read my letter of invitation click here. A number of schools have expressed an interest, however, please do get in touch if this opportunity is something which appeals to you and your school community.
During March, COBIS represented its members’ interests at the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS) conference in London. Supporting Governors of International schools is an area in which COBIS has specific expertise. Training and guidance can be accessed via the COBIS Consultancy service, online EduCare child protection and safer recruitment training and also during the COBIS annual conference in London, 10-12 May. The programme for the COBIS annual conference is strong. With preparations well underway, delegate numbers are steadily rising and have already hit the 150 mark. This year's conference will once again be the largest of its kind for British International schools worldwide.
Finally, a reminder about the current COBIS competitions which are available for your students to participate in - the COBIS Young Scientist Film Awards, COBIS Poetry competition and the COBIS Student Achievement Awards. With closing dates fast approaching, the first being Wednesday 2 April for the COBIS Young Scientist Film Awards, a rallying call for students from your school to get involved!
With best wishes,

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Online Applications
COBIS have recently completed a system trial to allow us to offer a DBS on-line alternative to the current paper based system.
Seven COBIS member schools have been using this system since December 2013 and to date all feedback has been extremely positive.
“I’m very pleased indeed with this service so far – a real time-saver!”
The benefits of the on-line system include:
- The speed of applications – cases are normally completed in about 3 days
- The accuracy of the input data / reduced errors – e.g. if an applicant does not provide a full and complete address history they will not be able to move on to the next stage
- Reduced postage costs – paper forms will not need to be posted to COBIS
- Email notification of the result from the DBS when the application has been completed – the certificate must however still only be sent to the applicant
The cost of the on-line solution remains comparable with the paper based version being just an additional £5 per application. Cost for DBS applications from 1st April 2014 will therefore be as follows:
- DBS on-line application £60.00
- DBS paper application £55.00 (no change)
COBIS are extremely grateful to the schools that have supported us during the trial period. The new on-line system will be available to all COBIS members by the end of March.
Sarah Wooldridge will be hosting a free webinar on Tuesday 6 May 2014 to introduce the DBS process and walk attendees through the new online system To Book your free place please visit the COBIS website or contact Sarah directly at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.

COBIS Primary and Secondary Games 2014
2014 marks the inaugural year of the COBIS Games for secondary schools and the third successive year for primary schools. The British International School Istanbul, Turkey will be home to the secondary school Games from 15 - 18 May. The Primary COBIS Games will be hosted by The British School Al Khubairat, Abu Dhabi, UAE, champions of last year's Games (pictured right), from 29 May - 1 June. Schools from 16 different countries will be competing in swimming, basketball, football and athletics.
Students have intensified their levels of training and are focused in their bid for glory. Many have expressed their excitement with the competition less than 2 months away. International School of Moscow’s Oliver Syms, clearly enthusiastic for the COBIS Games to begin, wrote “I cannot wait to take part in 3 days of sport….. A dream.” Imme Van Der Plas, also of International School of Moscow commented “I have really enjoyed training in 3 sports and cannot wait to get to Istanbul.”
Students have portrayed a sense of honour in being sporting ambassadors for their schools and understand the team effort it takes to win. Julius Rosenberg said “I have been waiting for something like this to happen for our school and I am very proud to represent the LIONS in the first ever COBIS Secondary Games.”
The COBIS Games is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn, compete, bond as a team, discover new cultures, motivate, make new friends and, above all, have fun representing their schools. Marisophie of St. Catherine’s British School, Athens is looking forward to being “all together having fun and working and bonding as a team” while Ariadni thinks “it will be great to see Istanbul and the different culture”.
With the start date only a couple months away, who will be champions of this year's Primary and Secondary Games?

COBIS Middle Leaders’ Course in Tokyo
Thank you to the British School in Tokyo for hosting a successful four-day COBIS Middle Leaders’ Course earlier this term. The course was attended by Middle Leaders from schools in Japan and South Korea.
COBIS and the BST received excellent feedback from course participants who found the four day event thought-provoking and inspiring. Richard Paterson, Head of English & Humanities at the British School in Tokyo, said:
"Developing people is integral to education. This is why the COBIS ‘Leading Learning from the Middle’ conference, recently hosted by the British School in Tokyo, was so valuable: it was packed with practical strategies to help the (possibly aspiring) middle leader to really get to grips with their role. The clear sense of vision and purpose that Karen Ardley’s guidance awakened in the delegates was most valuable of all."
Rosanna Chow, Primary Literacy Coordinator from Dulwich College Seoul, said:
“[The course leader] was able to bring awareness to people and help us humbly reflect on our own practice. It was a fantastic opportunity for myself and colleagues to be able to visit another British International School while at the same time gaining so much knowledge and being able to bring back so many practical ideas.”
COBIS would like to thank the team at the British School in Tokyo for coordinating and hosting this excellent event, and Karen Ardley Associates for delivering this course.
2014 CAL Symposium
COBIS recently attended the 2014 Cross Association Leadership (CAL) Group Symposium, held at the City of London School for Girls on 19 March 2014. The event was attended by delegates of independent schools across the UK. John Timpson CBE was the guest speaker who shared his thoughts in an insightful presentation. John is one of the UK’s true entrepreneurs and chairman of Timpson stores. He developed his family business through a series of re-inventions and diversifications to achieve a high level of success. He has been lauded for his ‘Upside Down Management’ technique, where he empowers his employees with a large degree of responsibility and trust. At the event, John Timpson applied his wisdom and vast experience to school leadership, illustrating how diligent recruitment, customer care and staff training and talent development are keys to success. John is a truly inspirational man and an exemplary leader. A special thanks to Cordelia Webb for organising such a great event.

The first COBIS Conference for Marketing, Development and Admissions Staff took place at the British School of Bucharest this month. The conference, sponsored by RSAcademics, attracted 45 delegates from 28 schools in 19 different countries.

A huge thank you to our hosts, the British School of Bucharest, who planned everything meticulously and made each and every delegate feel welcome. Special thanks to School Principal, Jo Puddy-Wells and to the Director of Admissions, Marketing and PR Simon Lambert and his team - Diana Frentescu and Paula Istrate - who ran the event with professionalism and efficiency despite a very busy week at the school.
Delegates were also able to enjoy a taste of what the beautiful city of Bucharest has to offer with the dinner at the historic Caru' cu bere on Thursday night.
