Welcome from Colin Bell, COBIS CEO

Dear Colleague,

By now I hope you have received your copy of the fantastic new COBIS World Student magazine, published by our colleagues at John Catt Education. This magazine is a major milestone for COBIS and we are delighted that the voices of so many students and staff at COBIS schools resonate from the pages of this new publication. Launched at the recent Student Leadership Conference at King’s College, Madrid, this magazine is a vehicle for your students to share stories and experiences with members of the COBIS community around the world. We encourage them to engage and participate by writing for COBIS World Student magazine as a great way to gain valuable journalism experience and add further interest to CVs.
At the Student Leadership Conference, I was fortunate to meet many COBIS students who are the engaging and inspiring leaders of today and I really enjoyed working with them to develop their leadership values and skills over the two day event. Many thanks to King’s College for hosting this event, and to both Geneva English School and the British School of Amsterdam who also hosted successful conferences recently.
The inaugural COBIS Conference for Bursars, Business Managers and HR Staff in Geneva bought together around 40 members for several days of quality CPD. The event was a resounding success with all delegates rating the conference as either good or excellent. COBIS is committed to providing quality CPD for all members of the school workforce and we encourage members to contact us with ideas about future conferences. The following week, members from schools in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and The Netherlands came together for the COBIS Conference for Teachers and Support Staff and Governors' Training Day at the British School of Amsterdam. This was another very successful event and COBIS would like to thank our generous conference hosts, speakers, exhibitors and school delegates who all participated and made these events successful.
Turning now to lobbying, COBIS continues to lobby on behalf of COBIS members with a focus on changes to administration on SATs testing, child protection and recognition by British and overseas government education ministries for the range of valuable cultural, intellectual and educational contributions made by premium COBIS member schools in more than 60 countries worldwide. Rest assured that lobbying to the benefit of COBIS members will continue to be a high priority for your Board and Head Office team.

Kind regards,

Colin Bell
CEO

COBIS CEO and Schools in Telegraph article

Parents moving to live and work overseas often have one priority above all others: where to educate their children. The article entitled The benefits of a British education but with a global dimension discusses how picking the right school abroad can give children the chance to develop a fully rounded outlook.

Ofsted Consultation
Ofsted are currently consulting on proposals for a new framework for the inspection of maintained schools, academies, further education and skills providers, non-association independent schools and registered early years settings. The consultation covers proposals for:

  • A common inspection framework for all early years settings on the Early Years Register, maintained schools and academies, non-association independent schools and FE and skills providers – this framework will mean that the same judgements will apply in each of these remits.
  • Introducing short inspections for maintained schools, academies and FE and skills providers that were judged good at their previous inspection. These short inspections, conducted approximately every three years, will report on whether or not a provider has maintained its overall effectiveness but will not provide a full set of graded judgements.
  • Conducting a full inspection of non-association independent schools within a three-year period.

The consultation document also:

  • Seeks views on whether or not there should be a separate graded judgement for the quality of the curriculum on offer or whether it should continue to be reported on as part of the judgement on leadership and management.
  • Mentions the changes proposed by the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Bill which subject to the will of Parliament, may lower the age of children that exempts schools from registering as early years providers from three to two (although this is expressly said to be separate from the consultation).

The consultation documents can be found by clicking here. The closing date for the consultation is 5 December 2014; however comments sent by 7 November 2014 would be greatly appreciated.

COBIS Annual Research Survey – **Deadline Extended**

Thank you to the 100 COBIS Schools that have already completed the COBIS Annual Research Survey, in partnership with GL Education. The deadline for COBIS Schools to submit responses for the COBIS Annual Research Survey has been extended to Friday 7 November. Please do take a few minutes to log on to http://reports.testwise.net to submit your responses. You will need your email address, and the password sent to you by GL Education, in order to access the survey. If you have not received a password and username, please contact cpd@cobis.org.uk.

Participating schools will receive tailored reports for Senior Management Teams and Governors, with benchmarking data relating to the COBIS family of schools and schools in the UK (on assessment choices, curriculum, extra-curricular activities, pupil and staff numbers, and more). Your responses will also facilitate greater school-to-school networking, allowing COBIS to link schools with similar interests or facing similar challenges for mutual support and sharing of experience. The success of this new project is dependent upon the support and participation of our member schools, and we are hoping that as many COBIS Schools as possible will contribute to this new research project.

Child Protection & Safer Recruitment Training

COBIS Schools are reminded that Heads or nominated members of senior leadership teams in all COBIS member schools will now be required to have completed training courses related to the following two subjects, Child Protection and Safer Recruitment. You may have already completed relevant training, however if not, COBIS can advise accordingly.

Please note that as a requirement of membership, this training requirement will need to be updated every three years. This frequency will be monitored by COBIS as a component of continual membership quality assurance. If you have already completed Child Protection and Safer Recruitment training courses, please forward relevant details to Natalie Friend – members@cobis.org.uk

Should you or a member of your senior leadership team require training, COBIS will cover the cost of online Child Protection and Safer Recruitment training courses for one member of staff at your school. This online training, provided by EduCare, will need to be completed by 31 December 2014.

To register for the Child Protection and Safer Recruitment training, please contact Fiona Rogerscpd@cobis.org.uk For more information about EduCare training courses, please visit our website.

BIS Magazine & Colin Bell's Article on the International Task Force for Child Protection

In the November issue of British International Schools (BIS) magazine  Colin Bell reports on a new initiative to enhance child protection. This article introduces the International Task Force for Child Protection (ITFCP), whose first face-to-face meeting was held in the Netherlands in September 2014.

The ITFCP has been established in response to a number of recently reported and shocking child protection criminal cases that have affected children and their families within the international school community. Following a series of catastrophic failings, a collaborative approach to safeguarding was required and essential.

Riverside Red Cross Babysitting Course
Riverside International School ran an extra-curricular babysitting course last year through the Red Cross. The course ran for 15 weeks with four girls completing it and another six participating, another four are enrolled for this year. They included guest speakers who talked about CPR and first aid and mothers who brought their babies in to talk to the students about caring for a baby.

Here is a quote from one of the participating students:
“I have taken the babysitting training course in Riverside School and have learned from it what to do in the case of a fire, how to handle young children and babies, and illnesses to watch out for such as septicaemia. I have also learned how to do CPR and deal with a child choking. I have enjoyed learning how to handle babies, and practising looking after them. I now have more knowledge on looking after children and dealing with incidents involving them.”

Dubai College Seeks to Export Its Model to UK Homeland

Many of the UK’s elite private schools have chosen to build outposts in warmer climes, exporting the British independent-sector brand to wealthy people abroad. But one leading school in the United Arab Emirates is seeking to go against the grain – by exporting its own style of British education back to the UK.

Leaders at Dubai College – a COBIS Accredited Member School which was founded by a British teacher in 1978 – say they now want to replicate their international school on English soil.
