Profile

Founded in 1974 with support from the British Embassy, British School Jakarta (BSJ) is an international school with British heritage, for boys and girls aged three to 18. It is located in 18 hectares of green space, on the outskirts of Indonesia’s capital, one of the world’s busiest and most dynamic cities. BSJ is a not-for-profit school, which means that funds remaining after expenditure are invested into improvements for its students.

BSJ was originally intended to educate the children of British and Commonwealth nationals. Today, about 1,450 children study at BSJ; 40% come from the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth, 30% are Indonesian, and around 40 nationalities comprise the rest of the School.

There are over 130 members of academic staff and around 230 employees in other supporting roles. BSJ employs more British-trained teachers than any other school in Indonesia. The classes are kept as small as they can to deliver the best education. The ratio of students to academic staff is around 12:1.

At Foundation Stage, when students are aged three to five, they follow the Early Years Curriculum. In Years One to Six, BSJ teaches a blend of the National Curriculum in England and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Students in Years Seven to Nine follow an academic programme that is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales, adapted to an international context. The curriculum in Years Ten and 11 culminates in IGCSE examinations set by the Cambridge Assessment International Education, Edexcel and AQA examination boards. Finally, in Sixth Form, students study for the International Baccalaureate diploma over a two-year course.

Students from BSJ go on to attend some of the most selective universities globally, with the majority opting to study in the United Kingdom and United States of America.

In addition to COBIS, BSJ is a member of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) and Round Square (an organisation that promotes experiential education). The School is also accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and has achieved Apple Distinguished School status for their sophisticated use of technology to enhance learning.
