Introduction

This year has been a fantastic year for COBIS Student Engagement, with more than 2,000 students taking place in competitions and events worldwide. The COBIS Art Competition was launched this year with 223 entries from 36 COBIS schools; the judges were blown away by the standard of artwork produced. Also new for this year is the Senior School Music Festival, taking place in Prague next weekend. I’m sure it will be a wonderful celebration of talent and hard work.

As ever, we are very grateful to all the schools who have hosted events and competitions this year and for those who are planning on hosting events and competitions over the next year. Read on for details on proposed dates for all the student engagement opportunities in 2015-2016 and we hope to see lots of our members getting involved over the next academic year.

Kind regards,

Colin Bell

COBIS CEO

    2015 Spring Term Results

    COBIS Primary Creative Challenge

'Come Dine With Us!' was the theme for the 2015 COBIS Primary Creative Challenge, with KS1 and KS2 students creating a stunning array of mouth-watering culinary delicacies from around the world.

In total, 41 films from more than 20 COBIS schools were submitted showcasing how to prepare drinks, desserts, snacks and main courses from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. All the fantastic films can be viewed here on the COBIS YouTube Channel.

Congratulations and well done to all the students who took part and thank you to all the staff and parents who offered their support and guidance.

    Key Stage One Winners:

    Key Stage Two Winners:

Thank you to our friends from Oddizzi for partnering with COBIS to run the competition and for generously providing winning schools with a free subscription to Oddizzi.com plus Lonely Planet Kids books. Thanks also to Browns Books for Students for providing books for two of our winning schools who already subscribe to Oddizzi.com.

    COBIS Student World Debate Competition

The team from The Edron Academy in Mexico City were the worthy winners of the 2015 COBIS Student World Debate competition which was held at the British School of Bucharest from 6-8 February 2015. The all-female team were on fine form as they battled some excellent teams from COBIS schools around the world to take the title from last year's winners, The British School in The Netherlands.

The host school team became the runners up in what was a very closely fought final which debated whether advertising does more harm than good. It was the first time that The Edron Academy had entered the competition, although the team has previously competed in debate competitions in the Americas.

The winners of the Plate competition were the team from St George's International School in Luxembourg with Rygaards International School in Denmark as the runners up.

COBIS would like to thank the host school, the British School of Bucharest for hosting a fantastic competition.

Congratulations to all teams that took part in the 2015 COBIS Student World Debate competition and we look forward to another exciting competition next year!

    COBIS Poetry Competition

Well done to all who took part in this year’s poetry competition. We received 171 entries from students in 43 COBIS schools on the theme of “The Funny Side of Life”. Both the team at COBIS Head Office and the judges really enjoyed reading the entries!

    Winners:

Category A: 10 years and under

    Category B: 11 - 14 years

    Category C: 15 - 19 years

Congratulation to all four winners! Their poems were published in the second edition of COBIS World Student Magazine, a print and digital magazine aimed at students in international schools around the world – and sent to all COBIS schools.

COBIS would like to thank John Catt Educational and Ian Bland for providing the prizes and for judging the entries. Thanks also to the teachers at Dubai College, British Embassy School Ankara and Prague British School who provided additional judging.

    COBIS Student Games

Congratulations to all who took part in the COBIS Games in Athens earlier this month. It was a fantastic three days of sporting excellence with great displays of teamwork and friendship.

St Saviour's, Ikoyi has retained the Primary Games title for the second year running with Dubai College claiming victory at the Secondary Games. Well done to the more than 500 students from 28 schools who took part and a very big thank you to St Catherine's British School for hosting such a marvellous event.

    COBIS Model-UN

We are pleased to announce that the first COBIS-MUN will be hosted by the International British School of Bucharest in Romania from 3-6 March 2016.

The COBIS-MUN offers students from COBIS Schools worldwide the opportunity to come together for a common purpose, to discuss important common issues that face our world today. This event will offer students the opportunity to intellectually engage with other like-minded people while developing key skills, including debating, critical and creative thinking, and the art of compromise, which are increasingly necessary in the world today.

If your school would like to attend the first COBIS-MUN, please complete the School Registration Form, returning it by the 12 June 2015. A letter of acceptance will be sent out by 19 June 2015 requiring you to pay the €150 registration fee by 29 June 2015 to secure you place at the COBIS-MUN in March. Places are strictly limited to a maximum of 150 delegates.

Schools with no previous MUN experience are welcome to apply, with IBSB looking to select a mixture of both experienced and first time MUN schools.
