Introduction

This year has been a fantastic year for COBIS Student Engagement, with more than 1,700 students taking place in competitions and events worldwide. The inaugural COBIS MUN was launched this year with delegates attending from 13 schools, including the host school, the International British School of Bucharest. The COBIS Poetry Competition continued to grow, with more than 500 more entries than we received last year; the judges were blown away with the standard of the poetry.

As ever, we are very grateful to all the schools who have hosted events and competitions this year and for those who are planning on hosting events and competitions over the next year. For the first time ever this year we hosted student events in Mexico, Dubai and Kazakhstan. Other events took place in Romania, Spain, The Netherlands, and the UK. Read on for details of proposed dates for all of the student engagement opportunities in 2016-2017 and we hope to see lots of our members getting involved over the next academic year.

Kind regards,

Colin Bell

COBIS CEO

2016 Results

COBIS Student World Debate Competition

Congratulations to students from the English International College in Marbella, who won the 2016 COBIS Student World Debate Competition in February.

After two days of intense competition, the Cup final was fiercely debated between host school and current champions, The Edron Academy and English International College in Marbella. The two teams debated at length over the motion "This house would legalise the sale of human organs". Both teams put forward an excellent performance and although very close, English International College took first place.

The Plate final was also a tough competition with students from the Prague British School pitted against the team from the Divine Royal International School, Nkpor in Nigeria. Prague British School came out triumphant after another very close debate.

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to The Edron Academy for organising such a fantastic programme of events.

More photos of the event are available on The Edron Academy's Facebook page, available here

COBIS MUN

The inaugural COBIS MUN was held 3-6 March, at the Intercontinental Hotel, Bucharest, Romania. In total, there were 108 student delegates present representing six continents and 35 nations, making the first COBIS MUN a truly international affair.

The conference, hosted by the International British School of Bucharest (IBSB), ran over four days, beginning on Thursday 3 March with a morning tour of Bucharest and ending in the evening with the Opening Ceremony and Diplomatic Dinner. Key speakers included HRH Princess Marie, the British Ambassador to Romania, Mr Paul Brummell, and the United Nations Representative to Romania and Head of UNICEF Romania, Ms Sandie Blanchet, along with COBIS CEO Colin Bell and Head of IBSB, Kendall Peet.

Congratulations to all who took part, as the level of both preparation and debate was outstanding. To read the full report and newsletters from each day, please click here.
