A COBIS survey of British International Schools has shown that 55% of graduating students in 2008 went on to British universities this year.
87% of graduating students from the responding schools went on to university. For those students moving away from the country where they attended school the most popular university destinations, after the UK, were USA (6%), Canada (4%), and Australia (2%). Imperial College London was at the top of the list of UK university destinations, followed closely by Bristol University, King's College London, University College London, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, and University of Saint Andrews. Of the surveyed schools, the British School of Paris and Campion School in Athens had the highest percentage of students proceeding to UK universities (82% and 81% respectively). Beyond Europe the British School of Cairo had the highest number of students entering UK universities (67%).
COBIS Chairman Roger Fry, responding to the research, said
"This is further evidence of the importance of British International Schools to the tertiary education sector in the UK. It also shows that many British schools abroad, particularly those that are members of the Council of British International Schools, are providing a high-quality British education that obviously prepares students well for higher education in the UK and around the world. This is why COBIS welcomes the Government's recent announcement regarding the inspection and recognition of British Schools Abroad."
The schools surveyed are all members of the Council of British International Schools.
