Welcome from Colin Bell, COBIS CEO

Dear Colleague,

It was a huge pleasure to welcome colleagues from over 120 schools in more than 55 countries to London for the COBIS Annual Conference last month. This year’s Conference was our largest yet with so many great speakers, seminars and exhibitors, as well as plenty of time to share knowledge with colleagues in the COBIS network. If you were unable to join us this year, we hope to welcome you at a COBIS event in the near future. All the dates for our 2015/16 Conferences were announced at the Annual Conference and are listed below.

One of my personal highlights of the Conference was watching the COBIS on Camera film at the COBIS Annual Dinner on the Monday night. All throughout the Conference, students from 2 COBIS member schools – Halcyon London International School and Transylvania College – were learning how to capture professional, creative footage under the watchful guidance of colleagues at Eye for Business. The result was an outstanding film which captured the essence, not only of the Conference, but of the COBIS network, and the passion and energy within it. If you have not yet watched the film, you will find the link below – it’s well worth a watch! A huge thank you to those students who took part, and to Eye for Business for helping teach them skills for life.

Immediately after the Conference I was delighted to join colleagues from 32 schools for the COBIS Primary and Secondary Games at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The COBIS Games is always a highlight of the COBIS calendar and this year’s Games were no exception. Outstanding performances were witnessed by all involved with many students gaining personal best performances on the world class facilities. Congratulations to everyone who took part, particularly our winners St Saviour's School, Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria in the Primary Games and Dubai College in the Secondary Games. A huge thank you to St Catherine’s British School, Athens who did a formidable job in organising and hosting the COBIS Games 2015 and a particular thank you to Janet Theoharakis for a master class in organisation!

During the same weekend, colleagues were heading to King's College: The British School of Alicante for the Primary Invitation Cup. After two full days of sporting triumphs, King’s College Madrid took the Gold medal, followed by St. George’s International School, Luxembourg with the Silver Medal and Newton College, Elche, Spain taking the Bronze Medal. A week later, the Secondary Invitation Cup took place at Park Lane International School, Prague with many more outstanding performances by students from competing schools. Congratulations to all students who took part in these events and thank you to the staff who made these events possible.

Finally, it is my pleasure to confirm that all COBIS member schools have now complied with the mandatory Child Protection and Safer Recruitment requirements for COBIS membership. This underlines the COBIS commitment to safeguarding the pupils in our care and is positive news as we work collectively to reduce risk to children and young people.

Kind regards,

Colin Bell
CEO

The 34th COBIS Annual Conference - Measuring Success: Wellbeing, Resilience, Education and Leadership in British Schools Overseas - took place at the Park Plaza Victoria, London on 9-11 May 2015. The conference was the largest yet with more than 500 delegates, exhibitors, speakers and guests attending over the course of the three days. Representatives from over 120 schools in more than 55 countries took part in a range of plenary sessions, seminars and social activities which enabled extensive networking opportunities.

The Conference opened with an inspirational session by conductor Dominic Peckham who reminded delegates about the power and inclusiveness of song. The Conference also featured keynotes from Baroness Sue Campbell, Ben Walden and Professor Guy Claxton as well as sessions which capitalised on the expertise in the global COBIS network. COBIS Spark, where members gave short presentations about innovative practice in their schools, was particularly successful.

Delegates also enjoyed several social activities and networking receptions, including the opening dinner which was held at ZSL London Zoo. The Conference also hosted the COBIS Young Scientist Film Awards where the worthy student winners of this year's awards were announced by Andrew Hanson from the National Physical Laboratory.

Throughout the Conference, students from Halcyon London International School and Transylvania College - The Cambridge International School in Cluj were catching all the events on camera as part of the COBIS on Camera film project. COBIS is grateful to Eye for Business who worked with our students to teach them about professional filming and editing. The final film was presented to delegates at the COBIS Annual Dinner on Monday night and can be viewed here

COBIS would like to thank everyone who took part in the COBIS Annual Conference. We look forward to seeing our members at next year's event which will be held in London from 7-9 May 2016.
