36th COBIS Annual Conference

 6-8 May 2017
InterContinental London - The O2, Greenwich

The 36th COBIS Annual Conference took place in London, 6-8 May 2017. The conference was attended by more than 700 delegates, exhibitors, speakers and guests from more than 70 countries worldwide. The conference opened with a keynote speech from Robert Senior, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi and alumnus of a COBIS school. The conference also included keynote speeches from Bill Sweeney (CEO, British Olympic Association), Professor Dame Alison Peacock (CEO, Chartered College of Teaching), and Professor Ian Robertson (neuroscientist, academic and author) who reminded us all to breathe and convert our anxiety to excitement. Other plenary sessions included COBIS CREATE, an update on the COBIS Patron's Accreditation and Compliance, a panel discussion on teacher supply, and a number of case studies from COBIS Schools. Delegates were also able to choose from an extensive programme of workshops and seminars.

Participants enjoyed a number of social activities and networking receptions, including the opening dinner at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich (sponsored by HP Inc) and the Monday Annual Dinner (sponsored by Discovery Education).

We are grateful to our headline sponsors, Naviance by Hobsons, as well as our other conference sponsors and all of the participants who contributed to the success of this event.

 COBIS on Camera Opening Film

Thank you once again to Eye Film for producing the opening film for the 36th COBIS Annual Conference.

 Student Engagement Presentation and Reception

At the end of the day on Sunday, delegates were invited to attend the COBIS Student Engagement Presentation and Reception. The winning films from this year's COBIS Young Scientist Film Awards were announced by Andrew Hanson from the National Physical Laboratory. The presentation also provided overviews of current opportunities for students in COBIS schools, including details about the new COBIS Global Social Leaders Catalyst taking place in China in December for student leaders in Years 8-10. Students from Townley Grammar School joined Future Foundations CEO, Jonathan Harper, to speak about their experience of the programme and how they had transformed their school community since completing the programme.

Thank you to John Bagust who has moved on from his role as chair of the COBIS Student Competitions and Events Committee, and thank you also to all of the teachers, support staff and parents who have facilitated students' participation in COBIS student events this year.

 Exhibitor Trail

For the first time this year COBIS organised an Exhibitor Trail to encourage delegates to visit the exhibition and get to know our exhibitors a little better. The trail featured fun facts such as 'which exhibitor is a semi-professional dancer', and 'which exhibitor has run 12 marathons on four continents'. We are grateful to the following Supporting Members who provided prizes for the Exhibitor Trail: iSAMS, BridgeU, Pobble, Nutkase Accessories, Piota School Apps, Double First and Naviance by Hobsons. Congratulations to the following winners:

  • Ken Page (British Embassy School Ankara) - won an Apple Watch provided by iSAMS
  • Guislaine Pickering (Ecole Mosaic) - won a Fitbit provided by BridgeU
  • Sandy Watt (Round Square) - won a Royal Selangor pewter gift provided by Naviance by Hobsons
