Welcome from Colin Bell, COBIS CEO

Dear Colleague,

As I write, the COBIS Conference for Teachers and Support Staff at St Catherine’s British School in Athens is wrapping up after two days of excellent speakers and sessions. On behalf of COBIS, I would like to thank St Catherine’s for hosting this event and I hope that delegates from your schools came back buzzing with new ideas and knowledge which they can put into action in your classrooms.
I was delighted to meet with colleagues at the recent British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) Conference in Qatar. Thank you to BSME for the invitation and the opportunity to present to conference regarding Safeguarding and the International Task Force on Child Protection, a topic which is of the highest importance to our family of COBIS member schools and those within BSME, FOBISIA, LAHC, CIS, ECIS and NABSS.  I was also honoured to join colleagues at Inspiring Futures, our valued COBIS supporting members, at a Reception held at the House of Commons last month. The excellent work accomplished by The Inspiring Futures Foundation which offers specialist careers guidance training, was celebrated and shared by attendees. I would like to thank our colleagues at Inspiring Futures for this invitation.
On behalf of COBIS, I would also like to congratulate all students who recently took part in our COBIS student competitions – the COBIS Primary Creative Challenge and the COBIS World Debate competition, which was held at the British School in Bucharest last month. The team from The Edron Academy in Mexico City were the worthy winners of the 2015 title in what was a very closely fought competition. I would also encourage you to watch the videos from the COBIS Primary Creative Challenge which are now on our YouTube channel – links are provided below. This year’s theme, Come Dine with Us! generated some fantastic entries which will undoubtedly have you salivating!
Finally it’s all change at COBIS Head Office this month as we bid farewell to our latest COBIS Intern, Tamsin Gordon, and welcome our newest recruit, Amy Carter. On behalf of all of us at COBIS, we’d like to thank Tamsin for her excellent contribution over the last six months. Tamsin is off travelling around Australia, New Zealand and Asia for the next four months so we wish her well.
We would like to welcome Amy, who has extensive experience living and working overseas after several teaching placements in Spain and one in Tanzania. Amy is the third COBIS Intern and the scheme continues to go from strength to strength, helping young graduates to gain valuable work experience in the field of international education. We would like to welcome Amy and we look forward to many of you meeting her at our forthcoming COBIS Annual Conference in May.

Kind Regards,
Colin Bell
CEO

The Edron Academy Wins the COBIS Student World Debate 2015

The team from The Edron Academy in Mexico City were the worthy winners of the 2015 COBIS Student World Debate competition which was held at the British School of Bucharest from 6-8 February 2015. The all-female team (pictured right) were on fine form as they battled some excellent teams from COBIS schools around the world to take the title from last year's winners, the British School in The Netherlands.

The host school were runners up in what was a very closely fought final which debated whether advertising does more harm than good. The Edron Academy proposed the motion with the British School of Bucharest opposing. It was the first time that The Edron Academy had entered the competition, although the team has previously competed in debate competitions in the Americas.

The winners of the Plate competition were the team from St George's International School in Luxembourg with Rygaards International School in Denmark as the runners up.

COBIS would like to thank the host school, the British School of Bucharest for hosting a fantastic competition, and in particular Elisabeth Citron and Sarah Palmer for their incredible organisation of this event. Thanks also to Headmistress Jo Puddy-Wells for allowing COBIS to host the competition at the school. A lively social calendar was also arranged alongside the competition, enabling students from all teams to get to know one another and form global friendships.

Congratulations to all teams that took part in the 2015 COBIS Student World Debate competition and we look forward to another closely fought competition next year!

COBIS Primary Creative Challenge

'Come Dine With Us!' was the theme for the 2015 COBIS Primary Creative Challenge, with KS1 and KS2 students creating a stunning array of mouth-watering culinary delicacies from around the world.

Congratulations and well done to all the students who took part and thank you to all the staff and parents who offered their support and guidance.

Kirkland Rowell Surveys Benchmarking Initiative

In partnership with COBIS, GL Education, publishers of the Kirkland Rowell Surveys, are delighted to offer you the opportunity to participate in a new benchmarking initiative. This initiative will support your school’s engagement with stakeholders and ongoing self-assessment, as well as enabling you to measure your school against the COBIS membership and other international schools.

Along with the new COBIS Annual Research Survey, which was recently completed by many COBIS schools, this initiative will also help COBIS to deliver on a key objectives for 2014-15, which is to better understand the characteristics of the COBIS membership in order to develop member services and support lobbying efforts.

To achieve a valid COBIS benchmark requires participation by a sufficient number and range of our members. To encourage as wide a range of members as possible to participate, COBIS has negotiated an extremely attractive price for COBIS members of £500 for Primary or Secondary schools and £700 for All Through schools. This offer is for the full digital survey service provided by Kirkland Rowell incorporating survey design, audience communication, data analysis and the production of detailed management reports for all three key audiences: parents, students and staff. The offer is available for the first 50 schools to sign up for the programme.

To confirm your participation in the initiative please contact Andrew Sleath at GL Education andrew.sleath@gl-education.com - or call him on +44 20 8996 3353. For more information visit the website.

News From COBIS Schools Around the World

Aloha College Supporting Cáritas and Inspiring Solidarity
Marbella (Málaga), 11 February 2015

In December the pupils of Aloha College collected non-perishable food items and used clothing to take to Cáritas in La Cala de Mijas to be distributed to people in need within their local community. Just prior to Christmas, they delivered 4 large boxes of food and several bags of clothing.

This inspired one pupil even further – Shaneze Sibille from Year 5 in the Primary School was so moved after delivering the goods, she decided to prolong the appeal. With her father’s support, she contacted several companies asking for further donations and delivered extra boxes of food to this charity. She is now expecting some further donations of food from different companies. She has even asked her friends to bring for her forthcoming birthday party food for Cáritas instead of a big present - Cáritas has proudly named her their “Junior Ambassador”.

This is not the only case of charity inspiration at Aloha College. Edward Martínez in Year 7 and Nicholas Martínez in Year 13 have been junior ambassadors for the last three years. They both regularly work at the Caritas center, and during Xmas holidays, they help to organise and distribute toys to the families. Nicholas is now about to start a course that will make him a fully-trained volunteer and take up a post of responsibility in the organisation when he is 18. Our photo (above) shows all three Aloha College students.

  • Illustrate how poetry can be used to develop the talents of young people, build their self confidence and sense of belonging
  • Grow leadership capacity by identifying the ‘leaderly’ actions that staff can take to enable young people to feel they fit in

This one day workshop will ask the question “Is this school a place where all young people and adults feel they belong”?
