Description
St Julian's is a co-educational and non-profit-making School run by a Board of Governors and the Headmaster. It was founded in 1932.The School is situated 25kms. west of Lisbon within easy reach of the Lisbon/Cascais Railway and 500 metres from the sea. Its buildings are adapted from an 18th Century Palace, subsequently used by the Cable & Wireless Company.
There are two 'sides' to the School: Portuguese and English. The Portuguese side follows the national system of education.
The English side includes a Primary and a Secondary School. Exams for the Common Entrance and GCSE (OCR & EDEXCEL) and IGCSE (CIE) are taken.
Students in the VI Form (Yrs. 12 & 13) follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
Facilities include a theatre/gymnasium, and two smaller gymnasium, three libraries, six science labs, art rooms, four tennis courts and playing fields where football, hockey and athletics are played.
Cooked lunches are provided in the two dining rooms for those who require them.
There are some 45 nationalities in the School, of which approx. 50% are Portuguese. On the English side the staff are experienced UK or Commonwealth trained. The maximum size of a class is 20. Immersion instruction in English is available in both the Junior and Secondary Schools and there is remedial instruction throughout.
The School year runs from early September to the end of June and includes the usual breaks for Christmas and Easter.
Admission above Nursery level is dependent upon satisfactory reports and an interview. .
