Description

The British School in The Netherlands (BSN) was founded in 1931. Since then, it has grown into a school of over 2000 pupils from Foundation 1 (age 3) to Year 13 (age 18).

Although just under half the pupils are of British origin, the school truly serves the international expatriate community with children from over 80 other nations.

Junior School Leidschenveen, Junior School Vlaskamp, Junior School Diamanthorst & Senior School are based in The Hague, but there is also a small satellite school, the Junior School Assen (The Helen Sharman School) serving the expat community in the far north of Holland.

The BSN is an independent co-educational day school, constituted as a legal association and managed by a Board of Governors.

Admission is granted throughout the year. There is no entry test, but to assist placement, previous school reports are required. Great care is taken to ensure the academic and social integration of every child.

A Learning Support Department exists to provide assistance for children who have learning difficulties - the department is also responsible for assisting with the school's 'Talented & Gifted' programme.

For those with little or no English there is an extensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) department, which provides help and support for all age groups.

The Junior School Vlaskamp (JSV) and Junior School Diamanthorst (JSD) are both situated close to the centre of The Hague. The Junior School Diamanthorst accepts children from age 3 into F1 (Nursery), whereas Junior School Vlaskamp starts with children from Year 1 (F1 from September 2009). Junior School Leidschenveen is a brand new campus in the Leidschenveen area of The Hague. This new school will eventually provide an additional 576 places for children aged 3 to 11. The campus includes dedicated facilities for Out of School Care, a Day Care Centre for 0-3 year olds and a Sports and Community Centre and is
approximately 10 minutes drive form the other Junior Schools.

Facilities include music rooms, a main hall (with modular gymnasium equipment in JSD), a circular drama studio (JSV), library, IT room and fully equipped rooms for craft, design & technology, science and food technology.

In the earlier years, teaching is based on a topic approach and all work is closely monitored to ensure that pupils are making progress matched to their abilities. All children enjoy a variety of experiences with trips, performances and numerous extra-curricular activities on offer.

As the children progress through the school, the subject teaching becomes more defined as the pupils are carefully prepared for the subject-oriented approach evident in the Senior School.

The Senior School is located in Voorschoten, a small town just North of The Hague. A brand new building has recently been completed offering enviable state-of-the-art facilities, including new science laboratories, information technology stations and library resources.

This investment represents a commitment to providing a modern and stimulating learning environment, to support the comprehensive educational programme, along with extensive recreational activities coordinated by a dedicated Sports Coordinator.

Students follow a broad and challenging programme of study based on the National Curriculum, but with an added international dimension. Pupils prepare for the GCSE examinations at 16 years and then have the option of continuing their education in Years 12 & 13 – known as the “Sixth Form” (16-18 years). Sixth Form pupils follow a course to AS & A2 level examinations, chosen from a wide variety of subjects.

The school has a long and proud record of success in these examinations with the majority of pupils entering universities all over the world.
