Description

The British School of Bucharest is a coeducational school located in the north of the city, 15 minutes from both the city centre and Otopeni, the international airport. Opened in August 2000, in response to a growing demand for a high quality, internationally recognised education, BSB offers students the perfect mix of old school traditions and values with modern facilities.

Amid well maintained buildings, high tech classrooms, and beautifully landscaped grounds, students receive a personalized educational experience which challenges them to achieve the very highest goals. Our programme offers students intensive tuition across a wide range of subjects in small classes from well-qualified, experienced teachers. We have a strong programme in place to challenge gifted and talented students and specialist teachers are available to provide the support needed for SEN students and students with a low level of English.

As a truly international school, with over 40 nationalities represented, students at BSB have the perfect opportunity to learn and use modern foreign languages. Students first start to learn a foreign language in Year 3 and are currently able to choose from German, French or Spanish. All our teachers are native speakers of the language they teach, which we feel is important to ensure that students learn to use their newly acquired language correctly. We also have a variety of language clubs running each day from 3-4pm, offering native speakers of a number of languages the chance to enjoy using their native language and to make friends across the school with other native speakers.

An important part of the school curriculum at BSB is the extracurricular activities programme, which includes after school clubs, university courses, school trips, and our secondary school work experience programme. We offer an extensive afterschool club programme from Reception – Key Stage 5, including clubs such as ballet, fencing, football, debating, and the Duke of Edinburgh Adventurers club to name just a few. We also offer Year 3-13 students the chance to take part in a school trip, with students from Year 6-13 travelling abroad to locations such as Venice, Berlin, Madrid, London, and the Austrian Alps. And for Year 7-13 students, we offer a work placement programme to help students to experience the world outside school in order to better prepare them for what awaits them at the end of their school education.

Pastoral care is another key focus area at BSB. This is especially important in a community where students are often moving from one country to another and need to be able to fit into a school and to make friends easily and quickly. An important part of our approach to pastoral care is the House system. Students and teachers arriving at BSB are placed into one of four houses and remain in this house for the duration of their time at BSB. The house system is like an extended family and the students are encouraged to look after each other and to bond through regularly arranged House events. Each class also has a form tutor and a student class representative whom students can go to for help and for the younger students there is also a buddy mentoring system set up between the older and younger students. We are committed in approach to maintaining student welfare and take a zero tolerance approach to bullying of any kind. We aim to maintain a pastoral care system which embraces the total care of the students based upon the belief that the dignity of the person is expressed through:
- the development of quality relationships
- the establishment of an effective care network
- the provision of well matched learning opportunities
As a student attending BSB you will be given every opportunity available to succeed academically. You will have the opportunity to try new experiences and to make new friends from around the world. You will be encouraged to join one of the many students groups on campus, such as the student council, the eco committee, the school band, or one of the many school sports teams. You will become a more confident public speaker, with many chances to speak or perform in front your peers in class, in assembly, or during one of the many interschool events. Importantly, you will receive an education that will prepare you for the next stage of your life. Most importantly however, you will have an educational experience that you will remember fondly for the rest of your life.

- Excellence in education
- Personalised learning and support
- Moral responsibility and discipline
- Life skills
- Friendship
