Description
The British School of Amsterdam is an independent co-educational day school and offers a British-style education to children of all nationalities between the ages of 2 and 12 years. The school was founded in 1978 by members of the British community in Amsterdam. It is a non-profit making association managed by a Board of Governors elected by members of the Association.The teaching programme is based on the National Curriculum (England and Wales) and also makes full use of the national and cultural heritage of the Netherlands. Music and drama, arts and craftwork and physical education form an important part of the curriculum in addition to the more formal academic subjects. Spanish is taught at Year 7, Latin from Year 5, French from eight years old, Dutch and Dutch culture from four years and English as a foreign language lessons are available for those children who need extra tuition.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities and lessons in several musical instruments are available. Visits to places of interest in and around Amsterdam are a regular occurrence.
The staff are fully qualified members of the teaching profession with a whole variety of skills and interests ensuring that each child's potential in all areas is developed.
The school is located on three purpose built sites situated in the residential suburbs of South Amsterdam
The Nursery and Infant School provides facilities for children aged 2-7. This site has 5 nursery classrooms, 13 additional classrooms plus a Language room, Music room, Information Technology suite, Library and a Gymnasium.
The Junior School, some 200 metres away from the Nursery and Infant School, comprises 8 classrooms, a design technology Lab, Food Technology Lab, ICI suite, Library and a Gymnasium.
As from September 2002 the British School of Amsterdam will be opening a Year 7 with the intention of eventually offering education up to the end of Key Stage Three. The Year 7 pupils are located in the Jubilee Building which is ideally located between the Infant and Junior school. The Junior school pupils also have access to the facilities in the Jubilee building which comprise a Language lab, Science lab, Musicology lab, ICT lab, form room, Design Technology lab and a Dance/Drama studio.
The school year begins in September and ends in mid-July. There are three terms with short breaks at half-term and longer breaks at Christmas and Easter. The school day begins at 8.45 and finishes at 3.30pm (4.00pm for Year 7 pupils).
