Description

The British School of Amsterdam is an independent co-educational day school , offering British education to children of all nationalities between the ages of 2 and 18 years. Founded in 1978 by members of the British community in Amsterdam, the school is a non-profit Foundation, managed by a Board consisting of a balance of parent and independent board members.

The teaching programme is based on the National Curriculum (England and Wales) and also makes full use of the national and cultural heritage of the Netherlands. Music and drama, arts and physical education form an important part of the curriculum, in addition to the more formal academic subjects. Spanish, French, German and Dutch are offered, and tuition in English as a foreign language is encouraged for those children who need assistance.

Senior pupils, from ages 14-16 years, are prepared for a wide range of GCSE and IGCSE examinations which give them a strong and a broad foundation. Pupils from 16-18 years then study for A-level qualifications which permit access to a wide range of universities throughout the world.

A broad choice of extra-curricular activities and lessons in musical instruments are available. Visits to places of interest in and around Amsterdam are a regular occurrence.

The staff are fully qualified members of the teaching profession, committed to ensuring that each child's potential is developed to the full.

The school is located on three purpose built sites situated in the residential suburbs of South Amsterdam

The Nursery and Infant School provides facilities for children aged 2-6. This site has 5 nursery classrooms, 13 additional classrooms plus a Language room, Music room, Information Technology suite, Library and a Gymnasium.

The Lower Junior School, some 200 metres away from the Nursery and Infant School, caters for children aged 6-8 years, and is equipped with a performance hall, ICT suite, classrooms and specialist rooms, and a generous play area.
The Upper Junior and Senior departments are located close to the city’s Olympic stadium. A performance hall, music practice rooms, science and art facilities, libraries and sports areas ensure that breadth of education, in addition to core teaching, is offered at every level and every age.

The school year begins in September and ends in mid-July. There are three terms with one-week breaks at half-term and longer breaks at Christmas and Easter. The school day begins at 8.45 and finishes at 3.00 or at 4.00 p.m., depending on the age of the pupil.
